We opened the kiln @eltallerdeceramica.artcentre this morning to find that it hadn’t reached temperature. This was a good opportunity to see what happened halfway through the firing. It may have reached 1150°C, so a few of the glazes started to melt but most remained dry and powdery.

These were supposed to be cone 9 copper blue chun glazes and a manganese metallic glaze. The silicon carbide in the chun has made it bubble. The manganese glaze has crawled.

The kiln will be refired next week and the results sent out.

Another good day mixing up glazes with help from Tania @coworkartcentre and Mari Angeles @eltallerdeceramica.artcentre . They will fire the glaze tests tomorrow in their very efficient gas kiln and we’ll see the results the next day.

Beautiful shady courtyards at Palacio de Viana in Cordoba. It was a really hot day so we enjoyed sitting in the shade. There were 13 different courtyard gardens with orange trees trained up the walls, palm trees, fountains, potted plants, geraniums in pots hung on the walls, clipped box hedges and goldfish ponds.

I learn something new every time I teach a glaze workshop. It’s important to try to work out not just what happened but why it happened.

One of the glazes crawled expectedly. Materials that cause crawling are clay and zinc oxide. In this case it wasn’t clay, because that would have made the glaze matt, so I think in this case that too much zinc oxide might have been added.

Another glaze came out speckled because it was stirred but not sieved.

Some of the crystalline matt glazes came out more glossy than usual because we fired higher and the kiln cooled very quickly. Some colouring oxides such as nickel and chromium make the glaze more matt, while others including copper, iron and manganese
flux the glaze and make it more fluid and glossy.
