How to make a glaze

Important information

Everything is dishwasher and microwave safe, except for the handmade cake stands.

All the handmade pottery is made by Linda in her studio in west London. All the manufactured pottery is made to Linda's designs.

The porcelain clay is mixed in Stoke-on-Trent. It is fired to a high temperature in electric kilns and resists chipping or cracking.
The glazes are made in the studio and contain no lead or cadmium.
Glaze materials: feldspar, quartz, kaolin, calcium carbonate, dolomite, and borax frit from CTM potters supplies. Colourants: small amounts of rutile, copper oxide, nickel oxide, cobalt oxide, and tin oxide.

Firing a kiln load of pink porcelain dinnerware, the middle of the kiln is hotter and the pink comes out paler. I usually only put pink pieces near the top or bottom but this is a whole pink dinner set. One small plate in the middle is white but the other pieces in the middle were supposed to be pink.

I am pleased with this Currie grid I made to investigate crater glazes. This is Lucie Rie’s dolomite glaze with added silicon carbide, just feldspar, dolomite and whiting in the bottom left hand corner. Kaolin is added up to 40% in the top left hand corner and silica up to 50% in the bottom right hand corner.

In the bottom left and middle, the glaze is glossy and the craters made by the silicon carbide have healed over. The interesting part is the top left hand corner, where the glaze is more viscous and matt and the craters have remained. The first column, second from the top is slightly pink. The grey colour comes from the silicon carbide.

Conclusion: to get good craters, the glaze needs to be matt and viscous. If it’s too glossy, the craters will heal over like bubbles rising to the surface of a pond. More details are in my book Special Effect Glazes.

I was in the British Museum recently looking at the famous moon jar that Bernard Leach bought in Korea and left in London with Lucie Rie. In all the times I had visited before, I hadn’t noticed that it has a small chip on the rim at the back. Its imperfections are what make it beautiful.

I turned sixty recently and feel so lucky and privileged. I have free travel on buses, tubes and trains all around London, a third off train tickets all around the country, free health screening and just found out I now get free prescriptions from the lovely NHS.

Next year I’ll be teaching more workshops than ever, around England and in Belgium, France, Spain, Denmark and Australia. I’m looking forward to meeting some of you on my travels.

This is a series of glaze tests for a dolomite matt cobalt glaze, increasing the silica from left to right and increasing clay from bottom to top.

The pink crystals are pyroxene, a calcium magnesium silicate that is coloured pink by cobalt.
I mentioned pyroxene in my previous post as a mineral found in basalt rock, used to capture carbon by turning it into a carbonate.

The climate scientist interviewed in the @bbcpanorama programme said that the fossil fuel industry could have captured the carbon dioxide from the gas they sold in the UK back out of the atmosphere and stuck it back under the North sea- twice over -if they were required to dispose responsibly of the carbon dioxide generated by the fuels they sell.
