Free video 2: How to add colour to a glaze

Following on from the first free video (https://lindabloomfield.co.uk/free-video-1-how-to-make-a-glaze/), this video shows how to add colouring oxides to your glaze

Important information

Everything is dishwasher and microwave safe, except for the handmade cake stands.

All the handmade pottery is made by Linda in her studio in west London. All the manufactured pottery is made to Linda's designs.

The porcelain clay is mixed in Stoke-on-Trent. It is fired to a high temperature in electric kilns and resists chipping or cracking.
The glazes are made in the studio and contain no lead or cadmium.
Glaze materials: feldspar, quartz, kaolin, calcium carbonate, dolomite, and borax frit from CTM potters supplies. Colourants: small amounts of rutile, copper oxide, nickel oxide, cobalt oxide, and tin oxide.

  • My latest strontium matt glaze batch ran and stuck all the pots to the kiln shelf. There are some interesting crystals on the outside where the glaze was applied more thinly. I need to adjust this turquoise glaze to make it more stable, both physically less runny and chemically more durable. First I will remove the lithium carbonate, substitute it with borax frit, add some kaolin, then I might try adding whiting or zinc oxide. These changes will all make it a less bright turquoise. The recipe came from Emmanuel Cooper and is in my glaze book, Special Effect Glazes.

  • I love writing pottery books. I learn a lot during the researching and experimenting stages and then pass on what I’ve learned. It’s really important to document and pass on knowledge so that others can learn from it. Since my first book was published in 2011, I’ve written 8 more books (with the help of 2 coauthors), they’ve been translated into 3 different languages and I’ve sold over 50,000 books. The three glaze books are the most popular: Colour in Glazes, Special Effect Glazes and The Handbook of Glaze Recipes. Thank you to my lovely coauthors @suepryke for Contemporary Tableware and @swansonstudii for Material Matters and to my husband @drhenryb for diagrams @diagramsbyhenry and proofreading.   • My daughter @bl00mfield came over the other day and we were talking about how we each used to make at least £20k a year selling online to Europe, the USA and all over the world, but then came the tariffs, unexplained customs charges and new impossible rules on product safety and packaging, resulting in a huge reduction in sales. So many small businesses are experiencing a decline in sales or even closing their online shops. What can we do? I’ve been making wholesale orders for my existing customers while keeping stock topped up in my online shop. I will also be exhibiting at this year’s London Design Festival with @raw_collaborative at Design Intelligentsia in Shoreditch Town Hall @shoreditchdesignweek in mid September.   • I was very happy to see this exhibition, Beneath the Skin by @anetaregel at @sarahmyerscoughgallery ; the final day is 15 August. Aneta Regel bravely pushes her materials to their limits; granite rocks imbedded in the clay start to burst and melt, porcelain slips crack and expose coloured glazes and clays beneath. The insides of the vessels are as exciting as the outsides. We included Aneta’s work in our book Material Matters An Artist’s Guide to Understanding Ceramic Materials.

  • New packaging regulations have made it much more difficult to ship to customers in the EU. In recent years I’ve been making more orders for businesses here in the UK: tea ware for tea importers, tableware for restaurants and lighting for lighting designers. I find I prefer making wholesale orders as then I can spend more time in my studio, less time packing individual orders and less time exhibiting at fairs.

  • The periodic table is an important feature in my books and glaze courses. For me, it explains glaze chemistry, metals and non metals, alkalis and acids, why fluxes melt glazes and why the transition metals oxides are coloured. It connects my first career as a scientist researching silicon and semiconductors with my second career as a potter and glaze book author using silica as the glassformer in clays and glazes.
