Free video 2: How to add colour to a glaze

Following on from the first free video (https://lindabloomfield.co.uk/free-video-1-how-to-make-a-glaze/), this video shows how to add colouring oxides to your glaze

Important information

Everything is dishwasher and microwave safe, except for the handmade cake stands.

All the handmade pottery is made by Linda in her studio in west London. All the manufactured pottery is made to Linda's designs.

The porcelain clay is mixed in Stoke-on-Trent. It is fired to a high temperature in electric kilns and resists chipping or cracking.
The glazes are made in the studio and contain no lead or cadmium.
Glaze materials: feldspar, quartz, kaolin, calcium carbonate, dolomite, and borax frit from CTM potters supplies. Colourants: small amounts of rutile, copper oxide, nickel oxide, cobalt oxide, and tin oxide.

The first three are photos from a week after firing, the last two photos are immediately after taking them out of the kiln. The crackle pattern can take days to develop, particularly when the glaze is applied thickly

  • My next book Emmanuel Cooper Glazes published by @herbert.press comes out on 14 January and is available for pre-order from @bloomsburypublishing or for worldwide delivery @blackwellbooks The book is the result of my three years of research into the private glaze archive of Emmanuel Cooper, potter, writer, activist and teacher who developed an electric kiln aesthetic with brightly coloured glazes and volcanic effects. He was inspired by Lucie Rie whose glaze notebooks I also researched and included in the book. They both fired in electric kilns to cone 8 and most of the recipes in the book are for 1250°C, but I have also included some low, mid and high-fired glazes. To coincide with the book launch there will be a touring exhibition of pots and glaze tests from @emmanuelcooperestate 12-23 January 2027 @ceramicscentre London 2 March - 30 October @craftsstudycentre Farnham November 2027- April 2028 @aberystwytharts 2028 @barnsleymuseums

These crackle glazes made on my glaze workshop @studiopotterylondon last week took quite a while to crackle. The first three are photos from a week after firing, the last two photos are immediately after taking them out of the kiln. The crackle pattern can take days to develop, particularly when the glaze is applied thickly
